I hate getting sick and feeling like crap!
Starting on Friday, early in the morning, before daylight, the dreaded chills and stomach cramping and aching began. I hardly ever have any type of illness. If I do; then it doesn’t last very long. Anyway, I couldn’t work Friday and I had a couple of meetings scheduled. I think in my adult working life I have missed 1 & 1/2 days of work in over 20 years. One was a kidney stone and the other was I had a classic migraine with neurological symptoms of a stroke. I had to wait until someone could relieve me at the pharmacy before I went to the doctor. For those of us in the medical field, aren’t we just the worst patients? I have not done anything since Friday morning and here it is Sunday night and I still have the headache, chills and stomach ache. I am better and I don’t believe that I am contagious anymore. People say, “go to the dr.” They can’t do anything for me that I can’t do myself for a virus. Rest, drink plenty of fluids and sleep. BRAT diet – Bananas, Rice, Applesauce and Toast. Things that are easy on the stomach and boy is my stomach “acidy.” I am not a good patient and I pretty much just want to be left alone. I am not used to having to be still and my butt is numb from sitting. A shower is about all the energy that I have expended this weekend. I have no idea what this is nor where I may have been in contact with a carrier. I’m still to the point that I don’t want anything touching my skin or my head. I am better than I was and I am drinking my water, Coke, and Sierra Mist. Taking the Tylenol (acetaminophen) or an aspirin/acetaminophen, caffeine combo. Sudafed only if really needed. Now, it is time to suck it up and get back to work. Thank goodness for my OPC-3 or I am certain that I would be feeling much worse.
I’m a crispy critter, help me…..
I fell asleep in the sun….OUCH. I hear it more than you would expect. Now you are a crispy critter and wondering what to do? First, use aloe or another NON-greasy cream. Greasy products hold the heat in. Drink a lot of water or Gatorade, Powerade or Propel. Take acetaminophen or ibuprofen for the pain. Do not use ice and if you soak do so in tepid (lukewarm to cool) water. An oatmeal bath is fine if you are itching & you may have to take some Bendaryl (diphenhydramine) as well. If water blisters appear DO NOT bust them. Some people need to see the doctor and if you feel nauseated or have a really bad headache go to your doctor. Stay inside and cool. Do not go out in the sun until you are well healed & then you need to use sunscreen. I know some of you think, oh well. It won’t be oh well in say 20 years when the skin cancers start showing up!
And the winner(s) are…..
Okay, I have done my research on supplements. My criteria was the following:
Does it make sense?
What scientific research has been completed? Is it reliable information?
Are the claims emotionally based or physically based?
I have concluded that if the product is nutritionally based then you will probably (there are no absolutes) see a benefit from the product. You still need to do your own research on the company and the products. Don’t accept as fact claims of “cures”. If everything could be fixed with a supplement then we would all have perfect health. That just isn’t so. Do the best you can with your food choices and exercise regularly. I do believe if you are on certain medications that you do indeed need certain supplements to ward off some unpleasant side effects and to help your body. Our bodies were made to work and be nutritionally balanced. We know that we don’t eat right all of the time and we do have some risk factors for disease or we already have the disease. If your body is nutritionally balanced then it can help heal itself in a lot of situations. Remember, “They said” and “I heard” are the two biggest liars in the world. When you start a regimen–do you really know what you need or are you guessing? Most any nutritional supplement that you take will take three months to really kick in. You will probably notice some improvement in about a week. It is also possible that the improvement is slow and not noticed until you decide to quit taking the supplement(s) after 3 or 4 months to see how your body is doing. Testing that way is good. Yes, I believe a positive attitude helps & some state it is a placebo effect. I disagree. There are two products that I see as nutritionally balanced, have the research to back it up, and just plain makes sense. They are Juice Plus and NutraMetrix.
I should tell you that as a health care professional I have signed up to be a distributor of nutraMetrix products. NutraMetrix also has a DNA Gene SNP test that is available. The test is sent off to a CLIA approved lab and you get a “book” based on your DNA of what nutritional supplements will help you. You only have to have the DNA Gene SNP done ONE TIME. Your DNA does not change. You will receive a one months customized nutritional supplements at no charge. Whether you purchase nutraMetrix supplements or decide to use another manufacturer’s supplements it will be worth the information you receive from the Gene SNP test. How much money are you spending on supplements? What if you knew what would be best for your body and did not waste money on things you really don’t need? That’s my advertisement.
